Blacksheep is built for Australian businesses and entities, and will soon expand to service international entities and businesses. To trade on the platform, you’ll need an Australian Business Number (ABN), meaning you must register as sole trader, company, trust, or self-managed super fund (SMSF). This guide explains who can register, how to apply for an ABN, and how to set up your entity account.
Why Blacksheep Requires an ABN
Unlike many exchanges, Blacksheep is focused on compliance and business-ready trading. Requiring an ABN ensures that:
- Users meet Australian regulatory standards.
- Entities (companies, trusts, SMSFs) can operate transparently.
- Individuals are trading as registered businesses (sole traders).
Who Can Open a Blacksheep Trading Account?
- Sole Traders: Apply for a personal ABN if you don’t already have one.
- Companies: Use your company’s registered ABN.
- Trusts: Family trusts and unit trusts can register with their ABN.
- SMSFs (Self-Managed Super Funds): Supported with their ABN and entity documents.
How to Apply for an ABN
If you don’t already have an ABN, you can apply for free through the Australian Business Register.
- Most applications are approved instantly.
- You’ll receive an ABN lookup record that you can provide to Blacksheep.
